The active ingredients in the kava, called kavalactones, soothe the nerves. A well-known study of the effects of the kava and anxiety was reported in Pharmaco-pychiatry magazine. The study was carried out in Germany and involved 101 patients not hospitalized volunteers who experienced anxiety or other nerve problems. Each participant received 100 mg of kava or a placebo three times a day. At week 24, the symptoms of the group with kava (on the Hamilton anxiety scale) had declined, indicating a reduction in anxiety in an average of 30.7 before treatment, to 9.9 with the use of kava. Those who take kava also mentioned that this induces relaxation without the drowsiness that produce the sedatives or tranquilizers. It also seems that those who use kava perform well in word recognition tests. The kava is also used as an aid to occasional insomnia and relaxing muscle.
